Widely distributed in lentic habitats in South America lowlands from Venezuela to northern Argentina and Uruguay. Total length 43-50 mm; body elliptical; ochre-brown to brown; the pronotum lacks longitudinal median carina (keel). As in all species of this genus, the eggs are glued onto the male's back and carried until hatching. Belostoma dentatum feeds on aquatic invertebrates, small fish, and probably tadpoles.
